Previous Equine Commissions

The following are a few examples of traditional equine portraiture commissions completed recently.

MACANDY

Macandy was painted using raw mineral pigments mixed the traditional way with a binding medium to make oils. This portrait is 3 ft x 4 ft on a frame stretched with 12 lb weight canvas and took approximately 110 hours to complete.

Through my years of study, I researched many classical masters, and amongst those it was the artist Stubbs who most inspired me and captivated me with the attention to detail concerning the anatomy of an animal as majestic as the horse. I choose therefore, to paint somewhat anatomically; from the bone structure out in order to give the full density and power within the muscles, tendons and veins, which in turn allows for the true character of the individual subject to have a good base from which to come through. This is of high importance when painting a subject such as this because it allows me to concern myself predominantly with the individual

TOMMY & CHARLIE

Tommy and Charlie measure 6 ft x 3 ft. They were done on medium grain Italian paper using Unison pastels. They have the same smoothness as commissions like “Macandy”, but the pastels make them a lot softer. These are Adelusian horses so the pastels suited their tones a lot better than a gouache or an oil would have done. Due to the perspective and composition of this particular commission the time taken to finish was approximately 250 hours.
