This dramatic painting captures the ultimate combination of traditional and abstract. The subject of the unicorn, so overly doused in clichés by society finds itself in a completely diverse and fresh environment. The abstract background inspired in colour and concept by ideas relating to myth and academia allows this notorious legend of fantasy to grace its own unique cosmos; whilst the classical form and open bone and muscle structure allow this mystical cosmos to filter through its very being. This allows its form to be ethereal and diaphanous to the eye, and yet solid to the imagination.

Inspired for many years by the works of artist Allan Lee, “Red Wood” sees itself as an abstract epitaph to the incredible depth found in Lee’s portrayal of trees. This original was an opportunity for the artist to experiment in portraying something so complex in linear structure but without a controlled hand involved. Painted several years ago, “Red Wood” saw the beginnings of the artist’s interest in working with the medium of enamel. By allowing this medium to integrate freely with the paint already on the canvas, the patterns of the enamels were hardly controlled and so the intrigue of the path they would take was of great significance. They behaved beautifully and are now one of the mediums used most by the artist. Here, their strange coagulation swirls and twists on its journey across the canvas, allowing them to convey that interesting age found in ancient bark; their branches formed only by the rough guide of the vessel that contained them.
